A collection of notes from films that have inspired me throughout my Final Year
ANIMATED FILMS
My Life As A Courgette

I loved the sound used in this film. It is mainly silent, with a focus on diegetic background sounds and footsteps. The camera angles were exciting as most of the film was shot at a child’s eye level. When Courgette is left at the orphanage the policeman has to come down to his eye level to be seen in the camera shot.
An Almost Christmas Story
I loved the distinct style of this film. It’s fully CG inspired by traditional stop-motion animation. My favorite stylistic choice was the faceless background characters that move as still cardboard cutouts. This could be an interesting concept to use for our film as it makes a scene feel full of people without having to do crowd animation and more modeling.

Popeye The Sailor meets Sinbad The Sailor

I love old fashioned 2D animation it has a lost art of silliness in fight scenes, like when Popeye is being punched and he has anchors and fish falling out of his pockets with each hit. This film also has a big emphasis on musical timing where every character steps to the beat. However, the age of this film is seen in its treatment of women with some very uncomeatable scenes of Sindbad assaulting “Popeyes woman.”
The Bones
I loved this film but struggled to get through it the first time watching. I decided to watch this late at night with no context but the description saying this was an exorcism using real human bones. The eerie sounds added to this film and old fashioned camera effects genuinely scared me. I’ve never seen a film like this before so after watching I researched into the context behind the film and found it was a commentary on the political corruption in Chili. Rewatching the film after this gave me a new perspective on it and made me feel more intrigued rather than scared.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
‘cuteness overload’
Puss vs Death final fight
The Lego Movie
I wanted to look at this film closely because the Pop Mart style we are interested in using in our FMP is blocky. Studying the animation in this film will help me bring life to our animation.
Michells vs. the Machines
Hotel Transylvania 3

Ruby Gilligan: Teenage Kracken

I found the bioluminescent lighting interesting in the film but I found the narrative very predictable and uninteresting. The animation style was very rubbery and lacking in bones. This allowed some interesting posing and fun moments when Ruby could curl her legs in embarrassment.
Rick and Morty: Heist episode
The main premise of this is that Rick hates the Heist genre because “steeling stuff should be about the stuff rather than the steeling”
“your skills are needed for a job, you son of a bitch I’m in”
Double-crossing, action music resembling the old crew, disguises, hacker cutting off the security camera, exchanging keys between crew members.
(episode was ruined by Elon Tusk)
Bao

I love the SSS on the skin in this film it makes the characters seem warm and glowing. This adds to the nostalgic themes of the movie about a mother letting her child become an adult. I loved the symbolism in the mother eating her dumpling son desperately trying to keep him with her forever. The character designs are fascinating as well. Every character has a completely different round silhouette and choices in the human son design to mirror the dumpling. I also liked how the mum and son both widen their eyes in the same way when surprised which shows their family resemblance.
If
I enjoyed the fun concept of this film and loved some of the character designs especially blue. I also really liked the support group for IFS and the different types of therapy used to help them cope. However, I couldn’t get past the script, it felt so forced. It took me out of the story because all I was think was no kid talks like this.

Sprite Fright

we used the character design for the gnomes in this film for inspiration for our characters. The production notes for this film were very helpful in pre production for our FMP. We also really liked the lighting in this film and Elisha is using it as inspiration too.
Trolls
I loved the animation and the final rendering given to the trolls skin. I thought it was fun and pushed it posing especially in musical numbers. However when they changed environment from the forest it look as visually nice and there was too busy in the background I found it harder to watch and caused the cheesy lines to be unbearable.

Peanuts

I loved the posing in this film, they really pushed their rigs to the extreme to mimic the exaggerated comic style in 3D. They merged 2D and 3D together successfully by using action 2D lines over 3D animation. This also allows the world to feel more childlike and for the ridiculous scenes to seem believable. I also love how all the adults just sound like trumpet noises.
Cereal!
The camera angles in this film was really interesting. My favourite was the zoom in shot down a shop aisle and up the display. This inspired me in my FMP and I created a similar shot to show my characters desire for the vape they want.
ACTION FILMS
Legend
The Kray twins, start with a narrator explaining the different personalities of the twins while they are smoking in a car. big distinctions between the twin personalities which could be interesting to explore in my FMP as it saves time to model multiple characters.
Natural Born Killers

The different genres referenced and the variety of camera angles are one of the reasons this is one of my favorite films.
One of my favorite types of shots used in this film are POVs like in the diner where the camera follows where Mallory is pointing the knife and gets thrown across at the worker along with the knife.
American Gangsters
I like the shots inside where the camera is behind a plant or shelf as it adds an interesting focal depth and makes us feel like were intruding. I found the film wayyyyy too long. I think alot of scenes could be faster paced or cut out because it didnt need to be 2 and a half hours long.

Civil War (2024)
I thought the visual gore effectively shocked the audience, but it felt like the film was playing it safe. While released on streaming on Trump’s first day as president, it didn’t take sides or clearly show the values of either side of the ‘civil war’. I also found none of the characters likable and very predictable when each of them would die.
Now you see me
Breaks the 180 rule when showing the character’s confusion to the magic tricks. Chasing scenes ends in Dutch angles when they don’t manage to catch the magicians.
Red One

I went to see Red One at the cinema. I wanted to watch it because I like the Rock and was intrigued by the bad score on rotten tomatoes. I went into this film with low expectations but was surprised by how funny it was. I think the element of surprise by seeing not many spoilers to the film was very effective for comedic timing. This was the first time I’ve laughed in the cinema.
My favorite scene was one where the Christmas witch was possessing a guy. The contrast between the calm witch and the extremely distorted weird noises from the guy shocked me and had me literally laughing out loud.
Another scene I loved was a fight scene where the rock tapped his arm and suddenly shrunk ran under a man’s legs then punched him in the face. I also liked the idea of Santa being hench as it allows for a unique explanation of how he can deliver presents to ever child in the world.
My main critique of this film was the soppy lines delivered by the Rock about how frustrated he was with people on the naughty list but think a Christmas film about Santa has to have those elements.
DRAMA FILMS
Woman of the Hour
This is the first film Anna Kendrick has directed and it has a very clear vision and aesthetic. This film is so clearly from a woman’s perspective, it doesn’t rely on gore and shots it shows the fear in subtle moments that reveal a man’s true intentions. This was shown amazingly in a cut when Shelby and Rodney meet and he’s grabbing her waist. Every woman has experienced this and it filled me with anxiety as a viewer. Kendrick did an interview where she described how she didn’t think gender has a big impact while directing but realized when her co-director wanted to shoot another shot with more dramatic expressions. But she knew that every woman would know what was happening with just a subtle look from Rodney. I loved how she lit Rodney in very dark lighting or backlighting so when there’s a long shot his shadow is large and looming over her.
“Did you feel seen?”
“I felt looked at”

Cross
I watched the first episode of this show. One of the interesting choices in this show is its focus on sound. To show when Cross understands the significance of something more than the other characters there is a noise of realization with a slow pan into him. The show also uses sound to build an environment, like when creating the atmosphere of a barber shop they use music to create an inviting and fun vibe. The show also focuses a lot on how it cuts between different locations. It often uses match cuts containing different lighting or colour to show the difference and similarities between the cross and the killer.
Priscilla
I loved the starting shots of the film starting with close-up shots of what the public perceives Priscilla to be; her eyeliner, and hair, music records. All surface level, making the audience realize we know nothing of Priscilla’s story only her image in relation to Elvis.
The whole film has a hazy effect added to it to mimic old films which has the effect of feeling like a memory.

How To Have Sex
The use of sound in this film was so powerful in conveying Taras’s numbness and uncomfort throughout. My favorite scene was Tara and Badger on the balcony, he’s trying to have a conversation with her while her life is falling apart. Badger realizing what happened to Tara is all through body language and facial expressions. Throughout the film, every time Tara is at her lowest you can hear her friends in the background saying best holiday ever, this makes it clear to the audience her isolation which adds to the agony of this film.

Aftersun

Aftersun was heart-breaking. The writing was amazing it felt so natural it had brought me into the world of this film. The ending was my favourite part of the film, the strobe lights cuts back to adult Sophie showed the confused and suddenness of her fathers love. This with the song saying “this is our last dance” made my heart drop in my chest.
American Beuty
I specifically chose to watch this film for inspiration on how to show an object of desire in film. The main desire in this film is his teenage daughter’s friend. Apart from the obvious disgusting narrative, it successfully conveys this through colour, sound, and lighting. The importance of the colour red shows how the only thing driving his desire is lust and the lack of it in his marriage.
the scene that most successfully shows this is the high school dance. The slow zooms in with the non-disagetic sound creeping in showing his detachment from the real world allowing the film to use rose petals and more suggestive dancing that isn’t happening in real life. This could be interesting to use in our film to bring in 2D effects that wouldn’t be real in the 3D world. I also loved the shot where everyone else in the high school gym disappears to show how focused he is on his object of desire.

Missing (2023)

I thought the use of the computer to tell the story was interesting. A lot of new films that use this technique it feels forced. However, the limitations of this made for a lot of plot holes due to the character only finding out new information on her computer.
HORROR FILMS
The Substance

I think the concept of this film was so interesting and poignant. In an age of children using anti-aging skin care and getting old being a major fear for most women, this film was actually scary to me as I related so much to the main character’s insecurities. It was so realistic that women would do that to themselves just to be appreciated and loved by these old ugly male producers. This film follows on from the rise in horror made for female viewers, telling their stories and fears. This is very different to older horror films like Shawshank Redemption where women were the main character but victimized and sexualized for the pleasure of a male audience.
My favorite part of this film was its use of gore, at some points, it made me physically recoil. Even though the last shot was impressive in the scale of blood, I loved the simplicity of the back-splitting scene and setting of the cold minimalistic bathroom that made it look almost medical. The more realistic setting made it even more disgusting.
Mr Crocket
The most successful part of the film was the genuine fear I got from Mr Crocket. the acting was so believable that even in the happy children’s show scenes there was something off and sinister that left me on edge. I also really liked the concept of the supernatural tv show set that flipped from a normal fun set to a horrifying demonic world when the adults arrive. The only thing that I didn’t enjoy was the main kid, I thought he was really annoying and kinda wanted Mr Crocket to keep him.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale
This film LOVES a zoom-in shot, for all of the exposition they decided to just slowly zoom into both the character’s faces during their dialogue. This puts no emphasis on which information is more important and dulls the effect of zoom-ins for the rest of the film.
Longlegs

I thought the film was visually beautiful, especially in its emphasis on empty space. This allowed a lot of suspense throughout and it used its jumpscares sparingly. However, the scenes I didn’t enjoy were mainly the ones with Nicholas Cage. His prosthetics helped me get past the fact it was him for a while but in the interrogation scene all I could see was him and not the characters. I also like the first two acts a lot more than the ending. The focus on the devil and supernatural felt a lot less interesting than the horror of Nicholas Cage.
ROMANCE FILMS
Love Actually

I LOVE Love Actually, it’s my favourite Christmas film, so as I always do I watched it mid-November to get into the spirit. As I’ve gotten older the negative comments about ‘fat’ women in this film get more uncomfortable. Especially with the comments about Natalie. The bedroom scene where Karen realizes her husband cheated on her. The emptiness of the bedroom symbolizes how alone she is in this news, having to keep a happy face for her kids. She only falters this façade when alone or when she sees her big brother. This heartbreak is what I love in a Christmas movie as adds more depth to the film.
